Artists > Crash Silverback & Max Muthaphukin’ Stax

The Dirty Sample is Crash Silverback and Max Prime is Max Muthaphukin’ Stax in Candy & Coombs, named for late, great Canadian entertainers John Candy (aka Uncle Buck) and Ernie Coombs (aka Mr Dressup?. And like these two personalities merged as one (Uncle Dressup?) in The Fly teleporter pod, the album is a mix of merry mayhem, moments of fantasy and dress-up, and even a bunch of life lessons, with the two rappers touching on topics of religion, pornography, greed, the hustle of life, and the pirate code. Plus plenty of that requisite rap braggadocio! The Dirty Sample provides his usual soulful sound for the backdrop, complete with plenty of snap, crackle and pop. It’s a fun record, and finally Candy & Coombs no longer languishes unreleased in The Dirty Sample’s vaults!

Back in 2009, producer and rapper The Dirty Sample and rapper Max Prime decided to work on a project together. The two had met earlier when Max Prime battled fellow Edmonton rap legend Epic in the final round of a freestyle battle, and the two built a rapport with a few song collaborations. For Candy & Coombs, the two adopted the aliases Crash Silverback and Max Muthaphukin’ Stax. Riffing off the beats The Dirty Sample contributed, one or the other would come up with the song concept and the other would follow. In this manner, the album was finished quickly, but it wasn’t until early 2011 that the duo dropped the lead single, “Like a Ninja”, through local indie label Neferiu, which closed before the promised summer release of the album.

Now seven years later, Max Prime has been conspicuously absent from the scene. “Ghost of maxprime” recently surfaced with a couple of new songs, but the big question is still: “Where is Max Prime?” Consider Candy & Coombs as Hand’Solo Records’ very own missing person poster and/or milk carton. “I hope Max sees it and gets hyped!” says The Dirty Sample. So spread the word, whether it’s as Max Prime, Max Muthaphukin’ Stax or Ghost of maxprime, please come back to us, Max!
