Welcome back DJ Moves!

With 60+ albums under his belt (and at least half self-released on his own Low Pressure label) Moves is a living legend and true Canadian classic. A DJ since ’91 and producing by the following year, he’s also known to kick the occasional R-Tard rap. Moves cut his teeth as a founding member of Truro, Nova Scotia rap group Hip Club Groove, best known for their video for “Shootin’ the Gift,” an early blueprint for Trailer Park Boys by director Mike Clattenburg, and later toured extensively as the DJ for wonderful one-hitters Len (“Steal My Sunshine”). Along the way, he touched down for significant stays in Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver, before ending up back in his hometown of Truro, Nova Scotia. But wherever he put down roots, he and his Halfwayhouse Studio proceeded to have a heavy and positive impact on the local hip hop scene. Any list of rappers for which he has produced albums must include Tachichi, Fatt Matt, Cee!!!!!!!!, Birdapres, Josh Martinez, and Governor Bolts, plus his own Hiss series.

The latest from Moves is Hiss 3 – Hissterectomy, the third instalment in his signature series of production compilations named for the high end hiss distinct to cassette tapes. When the first one dropped in 1995, simply titled Hiss, it was strictly a cassette release that was only re-released on CD much later. After Hiss 2 – Hissteria was only released on CD, volume 3 revisits the original inspiration with a limited run of cassettes available through Low Pressure, along with CDs and digital through Hand’Solo. As usual, Moves brings the boom bap beat heat, and always with a unique twist that illuminates his quirky production style. And to crush said beats, he taps the talents of underground legends Kwest the Madd Lad and Luke Sick, frequent collaborators like Birdapres, Mindbender, Fatt Matt, Tachichi and Cee!!!!!!!!, plus the awesome return of deviant “Mayor of the World” Governor Bolts! Be prepared to hear about: lots of drug and alcohol abuse, literal auto eroticism, this new thing called hip hop, odes to crew (or lack thereof!), and back to yet more drug abuse at the end. Jay O Smooth says it best closing out Side 1 of the cassette with “Fuckin’ LPFC”: “Low Pressure Fried Chicken gang tonight, east coast legends like Wu-Tang and Phife.” And that’s hella facts.

Filthy Animals, what you know about that? (remixed)

For their third single from new album Still Filthy, Winnipeg, Manitoba rap duo Filthy Animals released their odd ode to mumble rap, “Filthy Gang”. Hand’Solo Records brought in DJ Matto of Japan’s +/- to provide a b-boy barnstormer of a remix, and director Dag Deschambeault liked the remix so much he remixed his original video to go with it, trading in the black and white minimalism for bright, flashing lights and special effects.

RapReviews reviews Tachichi’s Top Ten

RapReviews comes through quick-fast with the first review for Tachichi’s Top Ten album, just released on Friday. Flash doesn’t fully agree with my opinion of “T’s best album to date” but still gives the album a solid 6.5/10. Here’s a taste of the review with his intro to the album…

Re-introducing… Tachichi!

Tachichi is a Halifax hiphop legend whose resume is as superb and as big as his talent, with his fingers in everything from writing to production to video directing. Tachichi has released 12 albums to date and played hundreds of live shows across Canada and the U.S. While much of his previous catalogue has been alongside Canadian producer and DJ Moves over the last 20 years, Tachichi has also released music with just about every influential and celebrated hip hop artist from the land of the maple leaf, including Buck 65, Classified, Quake Matthews, Ghettosocks, Skratch Bastid, Snak the Ripper, and countless others.

Tachichi’s attention is currently focused on the new powerhouse rap crew he founded with Ghettosocks, calling themselves Sipset, which includes fellow award-winning and -nominated artists NiLLa, Sean-One, Uncle Fester, Moves, Cee!!!!!!!!, ChanHays and more. Sipset is still working toward their debut album as a crew.

In the meantime, Tachichi follows up solo album Chico’s ‘90s Project, his exploration of his obsession with 90s pop culture released on Hand’Solo Records in December 2017, with a looser concept and an appeal to a broader audience. Top Ten is a tight ten song album (plus a bonus intro verse) with an eclectic array of songs and concepts, accomplished by reaching out to the best producers Sipset and Canada have to offer in order to find that perfect beat for each idea. The result is some of Tachichi’s best songs to date.

“Q Word” is an epic, fist-pumping anthem pushing perseverance in the face of adversity featuring haunting vocals contributed by Kim D’Ambrosia and a beautiful, evolving beat from fast-rising electronic music duo Pineo & Loeb. “To the Lost” embraces T’s love for R&B with a chill piano and percussion production from Fresh Kils, a hook from Chudi Harris, and Tachichi’s verse a passionate and touching open letter to his recently deceased grandfather. And “Atlantic Time” uses a car chase beat from ChanHays to tell a gritty, time-based story. Plus there’s the big-ass Sipset posse cut “Air Raid” and an ode to fellow Sipset founder Ghettosocks with “Ode 2 Socks”.

Top Ten may not be a collection of his greatest hits, as the name might suggest, but make no mistake that any future greatest hits album from Tachichi will definitely include many of these songs.
