I’m behind on posting reviews and interviews for Ultra Magnus & DJ SLAM!’s sophomore album Magnus Opus. So let’s start with Chi Chi’s review for Scratched Vinyl. Giving the album 6/10, he liked the album overall but was unhappy with the interludes and the perceived insensitive language. Eternia – “For This Life” with pHoenix Pagliacci

Eternia returns with her signature style of lyrical transparency in “For This Life”. Featured on Hand’Solo Records 20th Anniversary compilation Bassments of Badmen Vol. 3, the new single is a marked departure from Eternia’s dark and dusty sonic trademark. Reuniting with “Foul Child” producer A. Beck (aka Mr. Cincinnati), Eternia shares her spiritual journey over rich, rolling, ‘bump-it-in-your-whip’ production and enlists Phoenix Pagliacci to bless yet another Eternia offering with a victorious chorus, reminiscent of Lauryn Hill in the 90s.

The unofficial video pays homage to Toronto’s Annual Manifesto Festival of Community Arts & Culture which has provided a major platform for Eternia, Phoenix Pagliacci and many other Canadian Hip Hop acts. The footage was captured during MNFSTO 2010 and 2013’s Ladies Cipher at Yonge & Dundas Square in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Hand’Solo Records promotes at Maximum FM

Hand’Solo Records is staging a friendly takeover of Maximum FM Hip Hop. Last Saturday (Sept 17) Hand’Solo head Thomas Quinlan and rap phenom Ultra Magnus stopped by Thr33 2 6ix to talk with stand-in host Mic Boogie. Thanks for having us! This Saturday (Sept 24) Thomas Quinlan and Ultra Magnus will be back at Thr33 2 6ix from 3-6pm EST, accompanied this time also by More Or Les and with Chris GotRocks as host. And on Monday (Sept 26) Mr Quinlan (ha, that’s me!) will be live on air with the amazing Fresh Kils and DJ Seditious on Sidechain Slang from 9-10pm EST.

Moka Only’s “Food Truck” first single from BoBM3

Toronto indie rap label Hand’Solo Records is celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year with the third volume in our classic Bassments of Badmen compilation series, this one a 40-song, double disc extravaganza! And a celebration is only as good as the food and the entertainment, both delivered piping hot by Vancouver’s “Most Prolific” Moka Only with first single “Food Truck”, an oddball ode to many of Moka’s favourite subjects (food, travel, music, sex) over one of his own minimalist #horsejazz productions. Available in both original and clean varieties, “Food Truck” is also accompanied by a fun, fast food-themed lyric video produced by the award-winning folks at Lyricvids.com.

The Durable Mammal first teamed with Hand’Solo Records in 1997 for his first vinyl release, The Crystal Senate split-EP with Sixtoo, a rapper-producer from Halifax, Nova Scotia and sometime partner to Buck 65 in The Sebutones, followed by a couple of contributions to the sex rap spectacular, Cock Dynamiks, the next year. It’s awesome to have Moka Only back for Bassments of Badmen 3 alongside new music from Eternia, D-Sisive, Tachichi & Moves, Noah23, numerous members of Backburner, and many more, plus the return of Epic, Halifax rap pioneer Bonshah, and Hip Club Groove’s Cheklove and MacKenzie.

The original Magnus Opus release party imploded rather sadly thanks to a booking snafu, but Ultra Magnus & DJ SLAM! have recovered with a new release party as part of the 2016 Canadian National DMC DJ Championships going down at Revival Bar (783 College St, Toronto) on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. Come see Toronto’s best rapper-DJ duo kill it and then see the best DJs in Canada battle it out for the title. Also, Scratch from The Roots!
